Letter 1849 In a Letter, dated 10th October 1849, from Thorton Leigh Hunt to his Friends, he asks if anyone is able to help his brother John's widow and four children. He writes that since his brother's death a few years ago, that his wife "reaches the lowest depths of poverty, and is threatened by her landlord with expulsion for arrears of rent.", and that he himself is not in a position to help. It mentions that Mrs.John Hunt had been supporting herself partly through plain needlework, and had received help from her friends, which had been scarce of late. He writes that she owes her landlord for rent at 3s.a week. Also that out of the four children the eldest, 12 years of age, has been put in school for the second time "by a benevolent gentleman, Mr.Edison, of Plowden's Buildings in the Temple." Letter Oct.28,1851 Leigh Hunt mentions to his wife Marianne that John's wife had been ill and to come to see him, and he has promised help with her rent arrears.
